Operation Name Brakes Release / free carousel rotation manually
Operation Time \~1h
Operation Description When unpowered, the Carousel Brakes are preventing the carousel to rotate. This document describes how to release the Brakes to free the carousel rotation without the usage of any software/CANBUS control. This can be useful to rotate the carousel by hand ( \~ 35kg traction) to a given location with the system unpowered or to check that the carousel is able to rotate freely.
Triggered by Maintenance In some maintenance operation it can be useful to check that the carousel is able to rotate freely or to position by hand the carousel to the desired location.
Triggered by Monitoring Analysis This is the ultimate test to check that the carousel is free to rotate.
Triggered by Incident recovery This is the ultimate test to check that the carousel is free to rotate.
Traveler Steps
10 WARNINGS (Personnel Safety Hazards / PPE)
10,10 To free the carousel rotation and to rotate the carousel by hand can be dangerous, has when you force the carousel rotation by hand the carousel pod can grab your arm. It’s why it is highly recommended to perform this operation with the carousel un-powered to prevent unwanted motorized rotation, and to act on the carousel pod to force a manual rotation using a cable, and not directly with your hand.
20 CAUTIONS (Equipment Damage Hazards)
20,10 This operation presents a risk, in particular if the carousel is unbalanced as it can start to rotate by itself once the break are release. In practice this operation is fully safe with the carousel at -90 or 90 deg. With 5 filters in the carousel , the carousel unbalance should not be enough by itself to trig a carousel rotation independently of the camera orientation.

60 Useful Comments & Remarks
60,10 To open the carousel break, a 24V should be provided to the break. If the carousel is not powered (disconnected from the electrical bay? ) a dedicated cable will be needed to connect a 24V power supply, to the BRAKES. Then to un-lock the BRAKES, a relay will be manually activated.
100 Power Supply & Brake cable setup Initials Date
100,10 If the carousel is not powered (disconnected from the electrical bay?) a dedicated cable (this is a carousel part provided for maintenance ID? ) will be needed to connect a 24V power supply, to the BRAKES. If the carousel is already powered this step is not needed and you can directly jump to step 200.
100,20

The wires 24V and 0V of the BRAKE cable are identified on the corresponding wire. They should be connected to the power supply.

100,30

The other side of the BRAKES cable, should be connected in bay J , to the cable with the label BRAKES ( connector micro-Fit 5 pins )

Power up the 24V power supply, the limiting current should be set to at least 2A .

Access the bay Q . In picture above : relay/switch position prior to release of the BRAKES .

200,20

To deactivate the brakes, set the switch lever up . You will hear the relay doing its opening noise (“clack”).

300 Manual rotation of the carousel Initials Date
300,10 At this point the carousel is “free” to move. To move it a traction of ~30kg on one of the carousel pod is needed. ( access through one of the camera-body window ) . To avoid the risk to have your harm grabbed by the carousel rotation, it is recommended to act on the carousel pod to force a manual rotation using a cable, and not directly with your hand.
400 Manual re-activation of the brakes Initials Date
400,10

At the end of the operation, don’t forget to put back the Brake relay in its nominal position, you will hear the relay doing its closing noise ( “Clack”) and to switch off the power supply and dismount the power BRAKES cable if you had to install them.
